last month i helped bill and katie make the big move from florida to wisconsin. i drove a rental car down to orlando and flew out with them from there. while waiting in the front of the plane as people boarded and put up their stuff…
flight attendant to katie, “oh is this the baby’s first time flying?”
katie, “yep it is.”
then someone chimes in from the cockpit, “mine too!”
haha, gotta love fun pilots. then he brought the kids up into the cockpit to scope out the controls and press some buttons. i would have thought the “you’re about to crash into land” warning would have sounded a bit more alarming.
we made it to wisconsin after a somewhat painless flight (but half the bags and none of the car seats did. it was a nonstop flight too! come on people!). will surprised us all by not being the problem child (with getting over an ear infection that week) and emme took the award for most likely to be bored and restless. we spent a few hours in milwaukee while we waited for the missing luggage to catch up. we went to discovery world and it was pretty great. lots of fish, mechanical exhibits, propaganda for how awesome lake michigan and the municipal water system is…there was also a boat and sailing exhibit that was a major hit with pirate obsessed will. hey lake michigan! and katie’s finger! after a some delicious fried cheese curds (aka mozzarella sticks with a gross name) at a great restaurant in milwaukee, we journeyed the hour and a half to bill and katie’s tiny town. surprisingly, i didn’t see a single cow the whole time i was there. just lots of corn and some pheasant farms. you can see one of the pheasant farms from their house. they look just like the movie chicken run. also their house is definitely the best in their neighborhood. it sticks out like a sore thumb, the only florida style house. very fitting.we spent our time unpacking, cleaning (can you see the line where the black floor stops?), entertaining children, eating homemade delicious blt’s, watching bad documentaries (cat dancers on hulu. like a car crash you can’t look away from. spoiler alert, can you guess who gets mauled by a tiger?), and enjoying the view out the back of their house. we saw what we thought were prairie dogs popping up all over so katie ran out there to get a better look with the camera, only come to find out we were the idiots from florida taking pictures of squirrels. doh! ground squirrels are definitely more fun than florida squirrels though. it was also so nice to only wear stretchy pants for a week. i could really get used to that. some wisconsin curds. the cheese aisle in the grocery store was huge. we came home with sargento cheese and bill was like what the heck? sometimes you just gotta stick with what ya know. ha. also everyone in the store had at least three gallons of milk in their carts. so weird. katie’s friend found these awesome mom jeans for her to fit right in with the kind folk of wisconsin. we’re pretty sure their small town is a decade behind at least. they still had a video rental store promising free movie rentals for bringing in your good report card! a definite highlight of the trip was dining at the family inn restaurant around the corner from their house. when we walked in, i’m pretty sure i heard the cartoon screeching brakes sound effect as all 15 patrons and workers turned to see a family with actual kids coming in. they stared at us in silence for a full thirty seconds. awwwwkwaaaard. who knows, maybe it was just all regulars and they were just shocked to see some outsiders in there as well. as the waitress seated us bill joked with the kids that they’d have to be good since it was as quiet as a library in there. the waitress didn’t really appreciate that though and promised they had just been bustling an hour earlier. which makes sense, early bird special types seemed like the norm. it felt like the restaurant my pappy used to eat at everyday. another observation about wisconsin: wood paneling everywhere.we spent my last night out on the town at a hibachi restaurant which is so much more fun with kids. the next day they drove me back to the airport by way of a cute little vacation lake town. we didn’t really have time for hugs at the airport with the busy drop off zone so next time we’ll definitely have to plan that better. i was really glad i could get my boarding passes from a machine so i could have a minute to pull it together. wisconsin really was beautiful. it will be so much fun this fall with all the corn mazes too i’m sure and a white christmas will be magical. they just need to fly south in february when all that snow is a broken record. i loved this view of lake michigan and the night view is charlotte.
and then when i got home from wisconsin i spent time with emily and her clan before they left for their big move to ohio! kind of hating the midwest right now!
p.s. next time we’re going to chicago katie. no waiting to go until the day after i leave!
